Examination and conservation of a 17th century marble bust of Rome of the Musée National du Château de Versailles. Investigation of the deterioration caused to an artefact displayed outdoors and assessing the mechanical resistance of dowelling.
Rome was one of the sculptures commissioned by Louis XIV at the end of the 17th century to decorate the royal palaces. It is one of a group of white marble busts made after the Antique. All through the 20th century, the bust was displayed in the copse of the Arc de Triomphe at Versailles. These conditions caused characteristic deterioration such as erosion, biological incrustations (black crusts) as well as progressive fragmentation of the marble.
The objective of conservation was to stabilise the statue and improve its visual appearance so as to restore it as a decorative element of the castle. Reassembling the shoulder enabled applied research into the mechanical resistance of dowelling and its reversibility.
